“Lessons for a Safer Future” (pdf) 889k
Draws on the experiences of many organisations and individuals during and following the 2004 tsunami. The report offers eleven lessons as a contribution to the ongoing process of learning how nations, communities and individuals can become better prepared for and reduce the risk of potential natural hazards.
Online Country-by-Country Hazard Database
(web site)
A new online natural hazards database designed to assist disaster management NGOs, humanitarian agencies and rescue teams responding to natural disastersfor ten of the world’s most vulnerable nations (Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Chile, El Salvador, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Mexico and the Philippines). Like Wikipedia, inTERRAgate is designed to be ‘owned’ by data suppliers and users, who can influence content.
Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
(streaming video)
While covering what happened in CA, similar impacts and effects can occur in other U.S. vulnerable to large shallow quakes such as on the Seattle or New Madrid Faults. This 14min video shows what happened in 1906, what has been learned since, and what still needs to be done. Potential for lives lost, property damage and economic impacts are similar and comparable to other cities, but action can be taken to minimize risks. Video create for Quake '06 Conference, 100 years since the 7.8 quake.
New Orleans Interactive Timeline (Flash required)
Animated progression of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding impacts. Very helpful for those unfamiliar with the layout of the city and why certain areas were harder hit. Shows the vulnerability of the built environment. |
